My son took coQ10 for about three years along with other vitamins...and he did very well on them..he had muscle strenght tests done that actually showed minor improvements..and no degredagtion over the three years..he has since entered adolescence and has refused to take them. I have noticed a significant change and am in discussion with him to restart. He agrees that he felt much better when taking it so next week we will start it all again..he was taking 300mg CoQ10 with sellenium, folic acid, B6, B12, Omega fatty acids, Evening primrose Oil and vitamin C...this makes for a lot to swallow..but well worth it..he was also never sick with a cold or flue the entire time he took these. :)

Can you tell me how old your son is and how the MD actually affects him? My son is going to be 17 on 3-3 and he has never taken anything for the effects of the MD. Just wondering what this actually did to help your son. thank you Vciky Matthews

Hey Nolansmom You gave some approximate doses for the CoQ10...can you post some approximate doses for your son's other suppliments and maybe a rationale as to why your son is taking them. Some of them I'm familiar with, but others are new to me...I'm sure others might have similar questions. I want to compare what I'm doing to see if there are some differences and to research these some more. Thanks for participating... Kevin

I am hesitant to disucss dosgage as it is based on weight..consult your physician so as to avoid any problems with toxicity of some suplements. Most of these vitamins or suplements I am giving for their known benefits for protecting the heart, building muscle and preserving cells. I would suggest that you read about each individual vitamin and decide for yourself if you find it of value. My son is now 14 years old. His major concerns at this time are balance and stamina. He no longer runs or jumps but can walk on level surfaces for reasonable periods of time. He has recently began to use an electric chair to suplement for long distances..or for use in our neighbourhood which is full of hills that he finds hard to navigate. I enjoys swimming still but is also showing signs of reduced stamina in the water. He had maintianed very well while on the suplements and only since he has refused to take them (they are a substantial number of pills) I have noticed a decrease in his abilities and stamina. I am anxious for him to start again and discuss it with him often. I agrees that he was stronger when he took them and that he did not tire as quickly. He also had less back and leg pain. So far his breathing function is above average for a healthy person and it is felt that this could be as a result of his playing the clarinet. He also has perfect cardiac function. The folic acid is an antioxident that prevents the scaring of the aterial walls that allows palque to stick to them..I think everybody should be taking it. The V.b6 & B12 are for their qualties in helping cells renew and maintian their integrity. The evening primrose oil is for the development of muscle cells and also for the protective effect it has on existing muscles. The CoQ10 effects the structure of the muscle cell making it more stable and more resilliant also it efects the mitocondria of the cell increasing their capacity to matabolize energy. Sellenium is also protective to the cell and the Omega and Flax oils are for the cardiac benefits. Vitamin C helps with the absorption of some of the other vitamins.

Hello, I'm wondering is CoQ10 only for Becker patients with heart issues or are therr other benefits too. My boys are almost 12 and do not have any heart issues at this time. I'd like to hear of what other vitamins/supplements may be helpful. my boys use manual wheelchairs now for long distances & school and are just starting to have trouble with short distances tghey wesr AFOs at night but don't seem to help much anymore. :?:

I believe that supplements help at the margin but can have no substaintial impact on the disease process. At age 13-14 in 1985 I was enrolled in a double blind study of COQ10. They measured the cardiac stroke volume (ie how much blood per beat) and it did increase as I began to take COQ10. So it has been proven to make the heart pump more blood. But, as far as I know, there has been no definitive proof that it makes skeletal muscle in people with BMD stronger. I took COQ10 for years and still take it in smaller doses. But I have never been able to tell a differnece in skeletal muscle. On the other hand, recent Creatine supplement studies have shown that there is an increase in skeletal musscle mass and strength. Anywhere from 4% to 8% increase in strength. I try to take it everyday. The suggested dose is 5g dailyor about heaping teaspoon from what I have read. I've also read that Creatine can cause kidney stones.

Hi, I wanted to share this website http://www.doctoryourself.com/dystrophy.html I read this 3 years ago and started my son on the CQ10 right away. He was in Kindergarten back then and getting very fatigued. Noticed increase in stamina right away, less cramps, quicker getting on and off the bus...he is in 3rd grade now and handling the bigger school and bigger backpack just fine, we the help of the CQ10 we think. We tried taking him off of it and immediately noticed decline. I also started giving him Airborne tablets (inmune system supplement). It mostly has lots of vitamin c and some other minerals and vitamins including folic acid, potasium , selenium. He hasn't been sick in 2 years. This also took care of a bad case of hives he was having...After going to the allergist and being prescribed all kinds of drugs, I decided to try this approach and the hives and allergies are history. I just recently realized that the Vitamin E in the Airborne tablets is the synthetic one so I started him today on the natural liquid E...I will let you know the findings... Please check the link above and let me know your comments :D

Veronica, Thanks for posting this link. I have printed it out to show my son's pediatrician. He's 12 years old and is not big on taking pills. I told him he should start practicing so he can take some supplements. Currently he takes gummy multivitamines every day. It sounds like this mom has been brave to give so many different supplements to her son. I will run it by the docs and go from there. Anything to increase stamina and muscle strength to help him keep active. Meisa (Jordan's mom)
