Hey I have found that Creatine is the most helpful thing for me. It alleviates some of my muscle soreness, reduces my fatigue, and allows me to feel stronger. I have had allergies to some of the brands that I've tried, so if you give it a try, be watchful and try another brand if you have problems. Kevin

I believe that supplements help at the margin but can have no substaintial impact on the disease process. At age 13-14 in 1985 I was enrolled in a double blind study of COQ10. They measured the cardiac stroke volume (ie how much blood per beat) and it did increase as I began to take COQ10. So it has been proven to make the heart pump more blood. But, as far as I know, there has been no definitive proof that it makes skeletal muscle in people with BMD stronger. I took COQ10 for years and still take it in smaller doses. But I have never been able to tell a differnece in skeletal muscle. On the other hand, recent Creatine supplement studies have shown that there is an increase in skeletal musscle mass and strength. Anywhere from 4% to 8% increase in strength. I try to take it everyday. The suggested dose is 5g dailyor about heaping teaspoon from what I have read. I've also read that Creatine can cause kidney stones. BSTEPHENSON

Is this something you can have prescribed or is considered an alternative medicine?

Hey Meridith I would talk with your doctor on if/how you should take it. It has been proven to provide some relief in DMD and provide some small strength benefits. It is not a miracle, by any means, but it may provide some benefits for you. Creatine is available over the counter and is typically found in nutritional/vitamin shops. It can cause problems when taking in high doses, so it is best to discuss with your doctor. Kevin

Hi Do you know if there are newer and better creatine products available at this point? I am considering giving this a try... //Niclas

I haven't heard anything new about it lately. Please chat with your doctor about it, since there can be kidney issues in people with undiagnosed issues. Just get his approval etc.
