Hey I was just wondering if anybody in here has heard anything about If eating fruits or vegetables high in Potassium and Vitamin C helped Muscular Dystrophy at all. I was reading that athletes usually eat foods high in Potassium and Vitamin C after working out, to help the damage of muscle tissue, so muscles don't get sore. Would this help in MD? maybe to protect from so much muscle damage?

Hi, dreambigger. I believe that eating healthy is not going to hurt you. I have asked many doctors about nutrition and the disease, and they say it has nothing to do with it, but I would try to eat healthy. Especially eat amino acids which are in eggs. Doctors don't study that much in nutrition, so there is nothing that is published about md relating to diet. Anyway I am curious how you are doing? My son is almost 2 and was diagnosed a few months ago. We are doing physical therapy with him and I also give him co q10 30mgs. He has shown a bit of improvement in his walking. He has a deletion of exon 13 in frame. What is your deletion? It is very encouraging for me to hear about you, that you are in your 20s and still walking. I have taken note about the hard surfaces. I have a soft chair for him now to sit on. Take care :D

Hey, I'm so glad your you are using soft chairs now, I know from experience how much weaker someone with BMD can get from sitting for too long. As your son grows up try to keep this in mind. But always get him to stay as active as possible, its a must with people who have MD. I'm doing pretty good, its just that this past summer I had a few falls and sat down a lot, so I've got a lot weaker pretty quick. I am still walking though and try to stay as active as possible. I'm not quite sure which deletion I have, and I need to ask that on my next doctors appointment. I am currently taking deflazacort and creatine, its hard to say how I would be if I wasn't taking it, I hope its doing something though. I wish your son all the best and hope that he will stay walking for as long as possible!! way past 24, i hope the same for myself too :)

I just wanted to add that doctors at Cincinnati Children's believe that Calcium, Vitamin D and Coq10 are good for all BMD patients. They told me that they have seen a correlation between bone density and muscle mass. I have my son on all of the above supplements to make sure his bones stay strong. The Coq helps him with muscle soreness and fatigue. Hope you are all doing well. I also pray that there will soon be a treatemtn fro all BMD patients to benefit from. Stay positive and keep strong and active. Meisa (mom to 13 year old with BMD)
