Hello
Heart problems are more common in BMD patients, so visit a Cardiologist as soon as possible. There are quite a few available treatments for heart problems (thanks to all the people that have heart-attacks), but the sooner you start them...the better. Heart failure cannot be stopped and will gradually progress, but the sooner you receive treatment, the better you will be and the longer you will live.
Your doctor should at the minimum suggest the following tests to determine if you have a heart problem.
1) An Electrocardiogram
2) An Echocardiogram
3) Heart Enzyme blood work
If they find something, they may also order a few more tests:
4) Treadmill test - Allows the doctor to see how fit you are
5) Stress Echo - Will allow the doctor to see how your heart pumps during exercise.
6) VO2 Max - Measurement of how efficiently your body uses Oxygen. Similar to Treadmill test.
If you do have a heart condition, they will probably prescribe a couple medications:
a) An alpha and beta blocker
b) An ACE/erb inhibitor
c) A dieuretic
They will also tell you to exercise to stay in shape and keep your heart strong.
