Hey
I have always kept a personal copy of all my medical records. During my diagnosis phases, this copy came in VERY helpful and sped along the process.
I would recommend that all patients have a collection of their own records for several reasons:
1a) It makes review of your case very very fast and complete....I always worry doctors overlooked something or it wasn't sent to them.
1b) Doctors LOVE it. They have just as much trouble getting your records..they can use the extra time to focus on you and your diagnosis and not collecting paperwork.
2) It is a pain in the butt to collect this information over and over again if it is scattered in 10 different places.
3) Some hospitals are all electronic and others are not....you'll find that this causes lots of confusion and impartial transfer.
4) You should have it, so it doesn't get lost or destroyed. I have come across some clinics that no longer have my records....due to the fact that I'm older now and they are not required to keep it beyond 10 years.
I would encourage everyone to make 3 copies while your at it. I use 2 as loaners for doctors for reviews for second opinions, while I keep the 3rd as a personal copy of my own. This also gives me better control over my records, since I am only loaning the set to them and not having them make copies that could only be lost or even stolen. These days I prefer to minimize the transfer of large chunks of my medical history.
