Hello, I'm wondering if any other mothers with boys with BMD have had their daughters tested for carrier status yet? my daughter is now 16 and I'm weighting the pros and cons to getting her tested now. I'd like others opinions please. I didn't think this would be such a heard decision, but it is turning out to be one for me. I don't want to scare her needlessly. She is at this point in no danger of having children too soon. Should i leave the decision up to her when she turns 18? any advise would be greatly appriciated Carrie :oops:

Hello Carrie, I just found out the results of my genetic testing and unfortunately I am a carrier and have passed this down to my 12 year old son. I have a daughter who is 14 and I am having her tested to see if she is also a carrier. I think the more educated we are about things the better off we will be. I don't anticipate my daughter wanting to have kids any time soon but knowing that as a parent I've done my part to educate her is important. I debated over finding out about my own status but now I'm glad I found out. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will come out okay. She has always been active and does not have any of the symptoms I had growing up. I still to this day have leg pains and am finally relieved to know why that is. In a lot of ways I am more sympotatic to my son and what he's going through. Sorry for rambling but I just found out and wanted to vent. I hope this helps you with your decision. Good luck! Meisa

Hi my name is Cathy and I am also a carrier. My daughter just turned 18 and we've decided not to worry about it until she starts planning a family in the future. We pretty much decided that by the time she has kids there may be many options to consider. For example, if she were to have all girls everything would be okay. So, maybe she and her doctor could some how make that happen. I'm really not sure what her options could possibly be. But I do know that she will weigh all the options when the time comes and make an informative decision. :?

Just make sure that if they go under general anesthesia for any reason that the latest guidelines for MD patients are followed.  I had a surgery last month, and I assured the anesthesiologist that I was not a carrier.  Still, she told me that in the event that a mistake had been made and I do, in fact carry the disease, if I was given certain substances, it could be fatal.  Up until she told me that, I didn't realize that it was so important to know about carrier status if going under general anesthesia.

I think that finding out if my daughters are carriers is important on several levels. My 18 year old daughter is having unexplained abdominal pain that I have since discovered could be associated with BMD carrier. I have another daughter that is 28 and she has decided that she will wait until she decides to start a family before being tested. The girls both want to know but not until it is necessary. I just wish we could get to the bottom of the abdominal pain for the younger one. I have been tested and am the carrier for my son's disease. There has never been any other family member diagnosed that we can track.

Carriers can also suffer from cardiac manifestations of BMD sometimes... so it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out.
