Hi, My name is Susan. I am 49 years old and live in Missouri. I have been a waitress for most of my life. I hav'nt worked for the passed 2 years. I have been having mucle and nerve problems for a long time. I have been to Dr's for 10 years trying to find out what is wrong. Sometimes my legs just won't carry me. Walking kills me. I drive a three wheeler to go to the mailbox. We live on 12 achers and the three wheeler has become my best friend. My musles are week. I used to be so strong. My joints hurt. My pain moves around depend on what I have been doing. I have frequent charlie horses & muscle spasems. I have been tested for lupis, arthritis, not that. I get weeker every year. The front of my legs-below the knee is curving in. My calf mucles are changing. My lungs are week. As I said most of my problems are in my legs, but, Other joints hurt at a rapid rate if used. Stirring while cooking my wrist gives. My ancle hurts after a long drive. If I stoop to pick up, my calf hurts for a week. I took a brain scan, not MS. Could it be beckermd? Please help.....Someone

Hi Susan, I'm sorry to hear about all your pain. As far as I know Becker's MD only manifests in boys. I would recommend seeing a Neurologist and have the blood tests done to see where your CPK is at. They may then want to move forward with a muscle biopsy depending on the results and follow it with genetic testing to get more clues. Do you have elevated ALT/AST? That was the clue for us that something was wrong with my son. Best of luck to you in getting a diagnosis. Take care, Meisa

Hey there Just wanted to clear up a few things mentioned previously. BMD can manifest itself in women as severe symptoms, but it is very rare. Some carriers do notice some mild symptoms. So it is possible that you may have BMD related issues, but it is highly unlikely. If you are curious, I would recommend a CK test, which is a particular blood test looking for by products of muscle breakdown. If that is elevated, then further investigation would definitely be warranted. A genetic test (another blood test) would be a positive answer, but is somewhat expensive ($500+ and would not likely be covered by your insurance). Muscle biopsies are NOT recommended for carriers, since blood tests could tell you everything you would need to know.
