Last year my nephew was diagnosed with BMD, my sister is a carrier and i was tested and I am a carrier too. I have 2 girls 10 and 7 and they have 50/50 chance of being carriers. I want to get them tested to find out just now rather than wait, it is just a blood test. the doctor said i should wait till they are older. I feel if I know now I can be prepared if I have to tell them later and they will get tested at some point anyway so why not now. Does any one have any advice of what I should do. I wont be having anymore children but did lose a baby boy in 1987 who if he had lived could have had BMD. any advice would be helpful

Its a hard decision to decide when to get your daughters tested. My daughter is now 6 yrs old and i will have to decide too as she also has a 50% chance of being a carrier. All i know is, i was tested at age 13 and knew i was a carrier from then but it really didn't mean much to me then, i just always knew. It became important when i was planning to start a family. So.... maybe for my daughter too it would be better just to grow up knowing about it and it wouldn't be such a shock later? Good luck with your decisions.

Growing up I had a grandfather and brother and 2 cousins all on my Mother's side with BMD. So my whole life has been surrounded by this disease. My mother was a carrier as well as her 4 other sisters. any boy born into my family has had this. it's pretty sad. But I never got tested until I was Pregnant. I had a blood test done that showed I DID have the Gene Mutation and My child would have a 50/50 chance, if it was a boy. and he WAS! so now i am constantly looking for signs and worried that he has it. he's be 3 in Aug. So as of now i have no Confirmation he Has BMD but i do see him walking on his Toes. so that is a red flad for me :( But i am praying he doesn't have it. sometimes i notice he runs funny and that is another sign... I guess now i have to just wait until it progresses if he does. It's Very Stressful waiting to figure it all out :(

I am going to my family doctor tomorro for some advice as to whether to get the girls tested I will see what he says. I think I would prefer to get them done now then I would know and be prepared to explain things to them when they are older instead of waiting. I also got an appointment for a cardiologist for me as they say i should get checked every 5 years. karen

I was told that girls are automatically carriers. There is no 50/50 chance of your girls being carriers.Only boys are 50/50 chance of getting the desease. I have 2 girls 13 and 7, so I should know, thats what the doctors told me.

I was at the doctor today and I will get my girls tested. I was told if the man has beckers his daughters will automatically be carriers but if the woman is a carrier they have 50/50 chance and if you check on internet it agrees with this. karen

Yup. Karen is right. Here's a little diagram to show the two most common scenarios XX = Woman XY = Man Z= is MD affected X chromosome Woman MD Carrier & Man XZ + XY = XX(girl),ZX(girl MD carrier),XY(boy),ZY(boy with MD) Woman & Man with MD XX + ZY = XZ(girl carrier),XZ(girl carrier),XY(boy),XY(boy) Kevin

I would say that is a very unsual case, but technically possible. Woman MD Carrier & Man with MD ZX + ZY = ZZ(girl with MD), XZ(girl carrier), ZY(boy with MD), XY(boy)

Hi I got my girls tested and got the results today. They are both carriers. they are young just now 10 and 7 but at least i know for the future, i will probably tell them the results but it probably wont mean much to them just now. my sisters other 2 kids a boy and girl are getting tested next week, she already has 2 boys with BMD. karen
