I've found it difficult to get a good understanding of what physical exercise I should and shouldn't be doing. I was told to be physically active, since inactivity can cause significant irreversible muscle loss. On the othe hand, I was told I shouldn't over-exert myself. It is different for each person, but the advice I was given was: 1) Stop any exercise if it hurts. You should not exercise with pain. 2) Don't do anything that makes you sore an hour afterward 3) Do not exercise to exhaustion...meaning muscle fatigue. As usual, you should discuss exercise with your doctor...this information does not replace medical care.

Kevin I have been given the same advice and have been talking to the scientists about this for about 10 years. The three parts of advice you give above are good. I'm 35, still walking and have a fairly mild BMD phenotype. I have seen my body really respond to stretching and range of motion exercises in the swimming pool and also walking in the swimming pool. Also, I try and do just a little cardiac 3 or 4 days a week by doing a stationary handcycle. I do about 16 minutes just to get things going but don't overdo it. Anyway, the advice you give is sound.

I do have to say that I feel best when I swim. I think swimming is good for me, since I am able to exercise muscles that I normally don't use when I'm walking. It is also nice, since I don't have to put a lot of weight on my legs. Hot tub soaking also allows my muscles to be more limber and less sore. I haven't started stretching just yet....I have my first appt with a physio-therapist this week. Any suggestions on good stretching exercises? Kevin

I can totally relate to what you said, Kevin. I've been told to try to be really active, but not to "overdo it". When I was first told that, I wanted to laugh, because it seems like an oxymoron. I'm slowing finding a balance but it's tough to know if I'm actually "exercising", when I'm not allowed to feel tired. Prior to being diagnosed, I spent a good 6 months to a year practically killing myself at the gym. It was painful but at the same time it felt good to actually exert myself. Now I'm doing pool therapy exercises and it feels lame. I suppose we could distinguish exercise from activity. Exercise is commonly thought of as something to be dreaded, because it involves exertion and oftentimes discomfort. Activity, on the other hand, is basically meant to keep things moving...and does not involve pain or overexertion. Hmmm. I just thought of that. :P Knowing that we are not to cause ourselves pain or discomfort, is sort of a relief, don't you think. Well, this is more like a blog, but this is what happens when I post comments. :P

Looks like it has been a while since some one posted in this one. For myself I do as you said activities/routine: 1-2 mile walks either outside depending on weather or treadmill 3 times a weeks. Sit ups 25-50 every other day. Cheater push ups with knees bent 3 times a week 20 reps. Streching every other day. Lifting our 20 pound baby everyday :D What I use to recover: Sauna 1-2 times a weeks, Hot Showers everyday, Jacuzzi 2-3 times a week, Heating pad. I use to go get massages but to expensive but it did work. My diet is pretty much eat anything. I do take Vitamin C and eat Pasta. I try not to can weight due to then my knees start to hurt. I'm 5'7 so I keep my weight around 140-145. I also drink energy drinks once in awhile and plan on starting creatine again for a little while. Matt

I have found exercise with a "chest-expander" for my upper body very useful. Starting with a single spring I have moved up to two springs. I have found no bad effects even if I exercise to the point of exhaustion. The power-yogic exersice of "surya-namaskara" is also very useful although on little-bit on strenous side Chetan [quote="kgoodfellow"]I've found it difficult to get a good understanding of what physical exercise I should and shouldn't be doing.
