Walking is my preferred form of exercise. I actually find swimming a bit too intense on my muscles, but I'm able to walk for some distance without too much trouble. If you want to get a full body workout, and get the heart rate up higher, a useful accessory is trekking poles. You can find these at REI or other outdoors stores. They come in pairs like ski poles but with a hard carbide tip that digs into soil or rock. I have difficulty walking on trails otherwise, but I do fine with these, they really help with balance and take some of the load off your legs. They can also be fitted with rubber tips for using on sidewalks. These are a great example of something invented for another purpose that work great as adaptive equipment. I'd be curious if anyone else uses these, and particularly if people who are further along in terms of muscle weakness find them useful for general mobility. |
