Hi there, My name is Graham and I am currently studying Education in Maine. I do not have BMD but I am going to be giving a presentation about it to a class quite shortly. I have been doing research and have learned a great deal. I understand that Becker's MD can vary greatly in its severity. The question I have is how active an individual with BMD can be in organized sports? For instance, would a fourteen year old boy be limited to wheelchair sports, such as basketball, rugby, or racing? Or would they be able to take part in regular activities in their physical education classes? Forgive my ignorance, I am trying to learn as much as I can about this disorder so that I can share that knowledge with other prospective educators. Any input that could be given would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Graham

The answer is ...it depends on each person...there is no one standard description. Personally I wasn't diagnosed until I was 35 and I played competitive soccer as a kid all the way up to high school. I have been a skiier all my life and have lived a fairly average athletic life. Other people have symptoms much earlier and lose the ability to walk at a young age...yet others can walk through childhood and become wheelchair bound in early adulthood. There is no single answer. I think it is best to discuss the variation that exists (it's a spectrum) with this condition and focus on the symptoms/effects and not the schedule that they may/may not appear. Kevin

Hey Kevin, Just wanted to thank you for your reply. I will do my best to give the class a balanced understanding of BMD and the spectrum of severities that can be encountered. Cheers, Graham

Hey im Tyler, I actually didn't find out I had BMD until 2007 when I was 25. I played baseball and football since I was a small child all the way to my junior year in high school. I used to get really serious crippling leg cramps alot at practice, no one knew I had BMD at the time so my coaches pushed me and I would just keep going. I would have to do some serious stretching before I did any running. I remember a couple of times when I urinated after a bad case of leg cramps after running around out in the heat and my urine was damn near brown. Now that I know a little about BMD that was my muscles deteriorating that I was urinating out. I was really over doing it. In my opinion some people with Beckers can hang with a healthy person in sports but they are putting a serious toll on their body. I also have done construction and worked in the oilfield since high school. Im 27 now and still walking but my knees buckle sometimes when I'm walking and my back and neck always ache, I'm takin it easy now days. Can't hardly walk up stairs with out a handrail.
