I am 29 with BMD and though I am doing alright I have a problem getting life insurance. As soon as I mark Muscular dystrophy on the form I am denied everytime.I even offer to pay higher rates and they still say no.Is there such thing as an insurance company taking BMD Patients or am I a dreamer?

Hey Wayno

I'm not surprised. Life insurance is hard or impossible to get for certain illnesses. Unfortunately I think that MD is one of those.

I'm not sure there is a way around it, but maybe other folks have tried other ways of accomplishing the same thing.

Just wondering, is it the same way / similar for health insurance these days?

Hey Wayno -- I have Becker as well and was told once that I'd be better off self-insuring than paying a ridiculous premium. Essentially the idea was to open up an IRA or something and dump cash that would go towards a premium into the account.

Sometimes employers offer life insurance as a benefit so MAYBE you could find a job that offered it. I am not sure you'd be able to get on it for sure but it's possible.

Good luck.

Hey

Health insurance seems to be easier to get, but just as with many 'normal' folks, if you let it lapse, then the 'pre-existing' condition issue arises and may be hard to get re-insured. With the health care reforms that passed last year, soon this limitation will be eliminated, so you will be able to get health insurance with pre-existing conditions. I'm not sure how much more expensive it will be than a healthy person, but at least it will be an option if you have the $$.
